I can relate and also miss newspapers. I delivered them as a kid and remember the inky blackness in my fingers and the satisfaction of landing the paper on the porch.

Hey Riley! I have loved following your photography and excited to see your Substack, I am brand new here as well and still learning.

Honestly I’d be really curious what you think about social media in general. One thought I have had lately is how in our day to day there is joy, excitement, even a sense of pride? In finding “lowkey” locals only, hidden little spots that have AMAZING service/products and we sometimes even gatekeep because it is so good, in part, because of its smallness and simplicity.

Yet on social media it feels the opposite? Where accounts/creatives/businesses with small followings are not really viewed as “hidden gems” and more scrolled past as less valid/talented because the lack of likes, shares etc.

At least that is how it can feel, and at the end of the day maybe it’s just an insecurity from a smaller creative POV.

Long ramble but if you have thoughts I would love to hear!

I think it's in our inherent nature to find places less traveled, or restaurants less eaten. the feeling of finding a hidden gem is one of the greatest joys in life. But, like creativity, everything has been done, nothing is original and someone has been there before you, and will after. I love sharing new off the grid restaurants with friends who I know will appreciate it and see it similarly to how I do. I rarely share that stuff on instagram. maybe a hint in a picture to see if anyone who has been there before notices, but that's about it. this is why im excited about Substack. I feel like everyone here will see places the same way I do.
